A real estate agent showed me a house that is not on the market. Can I buy that home privately?

Jess asked:

I have not signed anything with the real estate agent (he’s only showed us 2 houses). The house was on the market, did not sell, so they took it off and may relist in the spring. We can’t quite afford the house, but think they may accept a lower offer if they don’t have to pay real estate fees.

I’m looking to start a career in real estate, but I’m not sure where I should start. My main interests are buying and selling houses/condo’s and fixing them up/decorating. I love looking at houses and seeing the potential in them and making them comfortable and liveable. So where should I start? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Will real estate agents only show you houses that are listed with their agency?

David U asked:

I am thinking of buying my first home, and was wondering if real estate agents only show homes listed with them. Or do they search other agency’s listing for a possible match. Also, do you sign a contract with a particular agent and only use them to find a home.

I’ve always thought that a real estate investor just bought houses, fixed ‘em up, and sold them for more money or something of that sort.
