I would like contract job taking pictures of houses listed for sale for real estate agents. How do I get started? Do I contact real estate agents directly and charge a flat rate?

most agents are not THAT busy to hire someone. find an agent that is and it may work for you.

You probably want a portfolio, to try and show that you’re a professional photographer. The good news is, with so many places moving ads online, and with the cheap/free cost of image hosting, this area is growing (online virtual tours of houses that a real estate agency has for sale).
If you’ve never picked up a camera in your life before, I wouldn’t bother. If you are in fact a professional photographer or looking to become one, then I’d simply put a resume and portfolio of your work together, start contacting the real estate agencies in your area, and also to see who amongst your contacts might have any leads. Good luck.
