I am starting an online business that advertises for apartment complexes and rental homes in texas and iowa. My question is, in order to advertise for the apartments, will I need to be a licensed real estate agent? I am not selling or renting the properties, I am only providing a place for the owners/companies to advertise what they have available.

I’m not sure about Texas and Iowa, but in Ohio, the answer is no. As long as you are not selling, renting or managing the properties. But you do need to follow your state’s real estate laws concerning advertising (Fair Housing logo, etc.)

I believe that so long as you are not renting other people’s properties for them, you do not have to have a real estate license. I don’t believe you will be in violation of Texas regulations.
Sounds like you are running an on-line search site, rather than a leasing service to owners or renters.
You probably need to include some sort of language spelling out your company’s policy. You should probably check with a local area real estate legal adviser for this.
Good luck
