My friend is thinking of getting a real estate license. Does anyone have any advice for her. Can she work for an agency and collect a salary or is it all commission only? What's the market like for real estate agents right now?

It is a very sales driven role, so commissions will be the important part. The market is said to be recovering and as we get out of the recession should show good growth long term.

I suppose it all depends on where she is from (Country, State, City etc)
I wourk in Real Estate in Western Sydney in Australia. In the company that I work for, we have a retainer (Salary each week) and once we make a target we then collect a percentage of the commissions. At the moment the market is fine where I am.
Real Estate involves long hours and is sales driven but one thing I have experienced in the last 10 years in the industry is that an average agent can make good money in a good market, while a good agent will make good money in any market (good or bad).
Remember, most people will buy and sell for a specific reason… some examples are:
* they may need a bigger house as their family grows
* they may be down sizing as the kids grow up and move out
* they may have lost their job and cannot come to an agreement with the bank and cannot maintain their mortgage
* they may seperate/divorce
Therefore it does not matter what type of market your friend is working in the real esate industry does not completely stop, and people will continue to buy and sell.
