What is a typical real estate commission rate for a home $500K?

Please help me. My house is being priced at $500K and the real estate agent wants 6% commission. She isn’t doing anything special that other agents do. What is an average commission for a home at this price? I feel she is asking too much?

I would call around to several of the large companies in your area, but typically 6% is the norm. There are some ala carte brokers but you should only use these if you are knowledgable in the process that you will take on yourself. In this economy it is harder to sell so agents really are putting in the work. During the boom they were selling within days and that was when owners had the leverage to lower commissions.
